Alcohol saved my life...

I've been wanting to write this for a while now but I haven't known how or what to say. I have also avoided the topic because in the past it has been a cause of conflict, shame, and a lot of hurt in my family and for me personally. Right now I feel like I have a good relationship with my family, regardless of my sexuality, so I am going to put it out there. This is not meant to make anyone angry or upset, it's just my thoughts. Although I haven't personally "come out" to everyone I know, I am pretty positive everyone knows. I mean, I lived with my girlfriend in Las Vegas--and most of my family met her, as did many of my friends.

The first time I told anyone that I might be gay was terrifying. I was surprised at the way my friends all took the news. In fact, nothing changed at all. No one freaked out or stopped being my friend. In fact, it was quite the opposite. They let me be the drunk, hot mess that I needed to be in order to be myself. They let me stay at their houses, puke in their toilets and cry my eyes out when needed. I needed to be drunk. All of the time. I felt like I was living one big lie. My friends knew that I was gay but my family didn't know- I was living a double life, in a sense.

I was waiting for the perfect time to tell my parents. I always thought I'd tell them "after I moved to a different city" or "once I graduated college" so I wouldn't be such a disgrace. Well, as it turns out, I didn't have to tell my parents... they found out in April 2009 after I went to Gay Pride in Las Vegas.  Not sure that's how I would have liked for it come about, but it did and I'm strangely okay with it now. I guess there would have been no "easy" or "awesome" way to tell my parents.

The next few months, to put it nicely, were hell. Utter and complete hell. My parents didn't take the news well and I tried to drown myself in liquor. I did a pretty good job, too. The months turned into a year and a couple of months; I thought that running away would solve all my problems. I moved to Las Vegas in September 2010 and stayed good and drunk until April 2011. At that point I was more miserable drunk than I was sober and that was a problem.

Even though my parents/family do no agree with my sexuality or my lifestyle, they let me come back to Utah until I could get into rehab about a week later. I am very grateful for that. I don't know what would have happened if my dad wouldn't have booked my ticket back to Utah the day he did. My life was going downhill very swiftly, literally and figuratively.

The day I had my alcohol assessment at the Horizon House on April 29, 2011 was the first day I hadn't had a drink in months. I was hungover, miserable, and scared shitless. I was crying because my body hurt but also because I knew that I would have to face the fact that I couldn't hide behind Everclear, cheap vodka, and spiced rum forever... or I'd die.

I didn't know how to be sober and be myself. I had never done that before. I didn't know if I was ready to never drink again, but I knew that I didn't want to drink that day because I felt like shit. Alcohol was how I was able to be me, although, looking back I guess it wasn't really "me". I was able to cover up all my feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment for being gay. I also covered up all the hurt  that I was feeling by drinking alcohol and blacking out. I was pro at blacking out. I guess I just figured that if I couldn't remember what happened last night, neither could anyone else. If only that were true...

Turns out that I hurt a lot of people, did a lot of stupid things, and probably killed my liver (and obviously my brain) by drinking-- all so that I could be myself.

Looking back it sounds kind of silly, but honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. I take that back. I would take back hurting other people along the way, if I could change the past. I can't do that, so I'm just doing my best to be a better friend, sister, daughter, granddaughter, employee and citizen today. I really love my life today. It's not perfect and there are things that I wish I had or that I could be better at, but overall I'm the happiest I've ever been. The best part is that I get to be me and I don't have to drown myself in liquor to survive. I can actually show up to family events without a water bottle full of vodka- or better yet, I can actually show up at all.

The weirdest part about all of this to me is that by being sober I have definitely made more genuine and caring friends than I ever did when I was drinking. These people love me for me and not because I can drink a gallon of Vodka and still walk (not coherently, but still...). I was certain that once I was sober and people knew I was gay, I'd have no friends. I was thought I was destined to be a lonely old cat lady who didn't have any friends.

While I may be a cat lady, I'm definitely not lacking in the amazing friend and family department. Everyday I'm amazed at how many people truly care about me, regardless of my sexuality or anything else. I guess I am just a lucky girl because I know of so many people who lose everything because they are gay.Sure there are a few people who routinely try to "save me" from going to hell and help me overcome my gayness. I know they are just doing what they think is right- and that's cool.

I am very blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life today and I'm so grateful that I am able to enjoy life sober and almost shame-free...I'm working on that one still. I know I still have a long way to go and that there will surely be bumps in the road, but for now I couldn't be more pleased with the way my life is going. I blame all of this on alcohol. If it weren't for alcohol I would never be where I am today or as happy as I am today. Seriously, alcohol allowed me to come to terms with who I am and now I get to be me sober. If you don't like it, you don't have to talk to me; I won't be offended. Plus, I have way too much going for me to be worried about what other people think about me.

Oh, and just for the record, I have been sober for 213 days today. That's 213 days that I mostly remember and that I've been able to be myself and for the most part be okay with me, too.
Pretty amazing considering that last year at this time I was probably throwing up in a garbage can next to the bed.

picture dump and random shiz

It's been a minute since I did a "life update", so here it is: Life is good! I've been staying fairly busy with work and sleeping with some fun stuff on the side, too. Here are some pictures from my phone...they pretty much sum up what I've been up to lately! Hanging out with Lily, Joey, and Bearzie dog.
I found out a couple of days ago that my gramps has cancer. Again. He'll find out whether or not they will be doing chemo/radiology in the next couple of weeks. Please keep him in your prayers. I love my grandpa so much and I don't want him to have to go through all of this for the 3rd time. He is an amazing example to me though and has been positive--I guess he knows a little more about life than I do. Regardless of what happens, I know that my HP knows what's up and will take care of my grandpa. I love you, Grandpa.
I got to see my aunt Leslie a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a long time. We didn't get to chat for long, but it was very nice to see her and see how well she is doing. Last November both her daughter (my cousin) and her husband (my uncle) passed away. I donno how she has such a positive attitude with all she's been through. Her strength amazes me and I'm grateful that I have her support in my new journey down recovery lane.
Anyway, I guess that's good for the update...now onto the fun part. Enjoy!

I almost forgot how much I loved music...wth

Do you ever forget about the things you love? ...or am I just a crazy person?

I almost sold my record player the other day. Why? I'm not sure. I mean sure I need money, but I highly doubt the $75.00 I would have gotten for the record player would have made me nearly as happy as the record player makes me. I'm glad I kept it. Now it's time to name him. The iPod is Jack and the laptop is Frank; I'm drawing a blank for the record player. Any ideas?

I saw my apartment for the first time today and I literally fell in love with it. I had looked at a few places and they were all pretty run down and gross; I did find one other one that I loved but the location was not good in terms of staying sober...ha ha. Right when I walked into my new apartment I loved it. I will post pics as soon as I get them. Yay!

Sorry that I'm obsessed with my new apartment. Don't worry, I'll probably keep talking about it for months...so get used to it! xoxo

7.26.2011

a happy list

  • Seeing Joey dance to MJ....perhaps the greatest thing on earth. I'll post a video sometime. It's worth viewing, trust me.
  • Fake baking. I love it. I'm still white and I'm okay with it; I just pretend I'm on a nice warm beach for the 20 minute sessions.
  • The fact that I'm going apartment shopping today. Yay. Can't wait.
  • I have been sober for 80+ days...I get my 90 day chip on Friday!
  • I have a job. Two, actually.
  • It's raining and I love rain. I bought an umbrella today for the occasion.
  • I got to see Annie B. for like 20 minutes and I loved every second of it.
  • Riding my bike to work. [coming back home is a whole different story...]
  • My brothers dog, Ava. She's cute.
  • Corinne and Lily for making me smile everyday. Bear & Cade, too. :]
  • Jack, my iPod. <3
  • Crafting with Joey.
  • Drinking fresh Dew. Mmmmm
  • Thinking of decorating my apartment and how I'll do it. Sooo excited.
  • Peeing in a cup a couple times a week. For all the awkwardness and fond memories that I make whilst doing so...Thank you, HHW.

Life is good. Different...and great.

7.14.2011

up for way, way, way too long...

I've been up since 6am on Wednesday. It's 6pm on Thursday now. Barf.

I started work last night. Coffee was spilled on my backpack and therefore the backpack was washed for the first time ever...and I've had it since I was a junior in high school. It look wonderful now. I might wash it more often.

I'm too tired to sleep. How does that even really work? Shouldn't I just be able to pass out if I'm so tired? I'm gonna go try to sleep- again.

I'm grateful for all the cool things in my life. Having a job is one of them. Huzzah.

early bird gets the worm while the sober girl gets to enjoy life... :]

Well hello there, fellow bloggers and earthlings. Since getting out of rehab a week and a half ago I've been planning a day to sleep in and so far, it just hasn't fallen into place and I'm oddly okay with it. I wake up before 7am everyday and I actually kind of enjoy it. Weird, I know.

Let me just tell you all the wonderful things I've enjoyed this week before 9am:

On Saturday morning as I was going for a walk there was a bike race going on right outside my door. I walked to the park and watched the race while they blasted some good tunes. I liked that. I would have never found joy in this before...ah, the joys.

On Sunday morning I left my house at 8am with my iPod blasting some wonderful music. I was walking to get breakfast and on the way I saw a bunch of chairs set up at the park so I decided to turn off my music to hear what was going on...sure enough, Sonrise church was having their services at the city park. I stopped, listened to their live band, which was actually very good, and then perhaps joined their church. Maybe I'll go back next week. And most of all, I'm glad I can see the joy of having a higher power these days. How cool.

On Monday I got to watch the 4th of July parade. I don't remember the last time I woke up for and enjoyed a parade. Well, this was the year folks. I had fun with friends and family. Fun day. :)

Every morning I get to enjoy the birds chirping. I never thought I'd enjoy being woken up at 6 or 7am by some birds practically screaming by my window...but I love it! What a cool way to start my day.
One of my most favorite things that I do most every morning is going to the park and sitting at the picnic table and watching everyone else. I've also found that I enjoy journaling a lot more when I'm outside and listening to music. If you ever need me before 8am, come to the city park...I'll be there.

Oh, and I've read two books in the last week and now I'm reading a book about Ghandi. Life is good.

7.08.2011

everything looks perfect from far away...

Today is...another day.
I'm sober.
I'm breathing.
I'm alive.

I guess that means it's a good day.

I don't have anything profound to say...go figure. I hope everyone has a good weekend! :)

7.05.2011

life as it is now

Life today is good. Great, actually. I am enjoying the simple things in life: friends, family, and of course, food.

I was able to spend the 4th of July with my sister Anne and my dear friend Corinne and her baby Lily. It was Lily's first birthday yesterday and I'm glad I got to celebrate with her! We went to the parade, the park, had lunch and then later that night watched fireworks and had sparklers. I'm so grateful to have such wonderful people in my life who make each day a new adventure!

Right now I'm going through a period of change. Pretty much everyone and everything in my life is different than it has been before. I miss my old friends and I miss my old home. I miss my old life...

HOWEVER,

I don't remember the last time I woke up in the morning and didn't feel like I wanted to die, either from being hungover or because I really didn't have anything for me. Now I wake up in the morning refreshed and excited to see what the day has to offer me.  I'm grateful for all the things I've learned in the...well, my entire life, but especially the last year or so.

With all the changes in my life that are taking place, I find myself single and flying solo, once again. I miss Jordan and hope she's well. Life is funny like that...but I think that's just how it goes. My life is going in a totally different direction that it was 2 months ago and I'm still shocked everyday by all the people in my life who are cheering for me. Thank you to everyone for all your support and understanding.

Oh, and I'm gonna make this today while I'm "crafting" with Enna. :] Wish me luck!

9.01.2010

meet my (new) sister!

I got a new baby sister, Sofia! She's not actually a baby, but whatever.
Welcome to the family, kid. :]

3.29.2010

goll damn, i could use a coke

It's 4:10pm and I haven't showered. Nope, not sick. Just lazy.

I was gonna run to the Mav and grab a coke, and then I looked in the mirror and decided I should never leave the house looking like this. I hate my life sometimes.

Oh, and of course I get to have my booking picture taken this week. Glad I have 20 million zits on my face. You're welcome, Cedar City. Enjoy!

3.11.2010

i'm having a quarter-effing-life crisis...help!

For those who don't know me, I'll soon be 25 years old. In fact, I'll be a quarter of a century old in exactly 177 short days. EEK!

Okay, okay...for ya'll who are already to the big 2-5 mark and beyond, chillax. I don't think you're old if you're over 25. I'm just a freakin' out a little bit because I always thought that by 25 I'd have a completely different life than I do right now. Ever since I was little I always thought that by 25 I'd "have it all" : sexy husband, white picket fenced in house, little dog in the backyard, 8 (effing) kids, and the president of the young women's.

Honestly, I've never had, and will never have any of those things...at least not in the way I had planned for so many years. And I'm perfectly okay with it. Sure, sometimes I wonder how much different or "easy" might life could be if I did choose my childhood path and it almost seems worth it. Then I snap back to reality and I remember that I'd end up in a mental institution if this : sexy husband, white picket fenced in house, little dog in the backyard, 8 kids, and the president of the young women's, was my life.

I don't want a husband. I could settle for a studio apartment in a larger city. A dog, sure, why not? 8 kids, dream on. Church? No thanks.

Yes, I'm freaking out that I'm turning 25 because I have absolutely no idea where my life is going and where I'll end up next...but I guess that's also what I love about my life so much. I have nothing tying me down or holding me in one spot. I am free to blow with the wind; I hope I never get tied down.

Naturally, I don't want to end up alone and I don't intend to do so. I just don't want the same things I always thought I'd want. Sometimes it's confusing to try and break out of the mold that was made for me and what I wanted for so long; sometimes I don't know if I'm making the right choices.

Confused as I may be, I do know one thing, I know that no matter what I do I'll always have my family and friends and what more could a girl ask for? So to all of you who get to deal with my "quarter-life crisis" freak out sessions, just know that I love you. And until I'm done freaking out and deciding what to do next, sorry I'm a little bitch. xoxo

So here's to making the big 2-5 the best it can be! I can't wait to see what life hands me next! Bring it on! (and trust me, I know I have a while until my birthday)...but just in case you want gift ideas, here ya go:

  • books. i love books.
  • music is nice.
  • money.
  • a lover? maybe...
  • scrabble shit. <3
  • notes/cards/letters
  • candy

  • I'mma go stuff my face with Brad's now. Goodbye.
oh and p.s. I quit the HCG diet for now. hahaha

some sunday stuff

Some lyrics I love: (thanks to baby girl Jenny Lewis for this song)
It’s not as if New York City burnt down to the ground
Once you drove away
It’s not as if the sun won’t shine
When clouds up above
Wash the blues away

Are we breakin' up?
(Breakin up)
Are we breakin' up?
(Breakin' up)
Is there trouble between you and I?
Did my heart break enough?
(Break enough)
Did it Break enough this time
(Break enough)

Here’s to all the pretty words we will never speak
Here’s to all the pretty girls you're gonna meet

Am I breakin up?
(Breakin up)
Am I Breakin up
Is there trouble on the line?
Did your heart break enough?
(Break enough)
Did it Break enough this time
(Break enough)

Ooooh, it feels good to be free
Oooh it feels good to be free
Oooh it feels good to be free

Betrayal is a thorny crown
You wear it well
Just like a king
Revenge is the saddest thing
Honey, I’m afraid to say
You deserve everything

Am I breakin up?
(Breakin up)
Are we breakin up?
Is there trouble between the lines?
Did your heart break enough?
(Break enough)
Did it break enough?
(Break enough)
Break enough this time?

Ooooh, it feels good to be free
Oooh it feels good to be free
Oooh it feels good to be free

On a different note, I think I'm gonna move to sunny St. George for the summer. I mean nothing is set in stone and I don't have a job or a place to live down there, but I would like to do it. I need a change of pace and some new faces; St. George is close enough to come home if needed and far enough away that I can meet some new friends.

____________________________________________________________________

On another completely unrelated note, my sister is back and I am lovin' it! :)

Hope you have a great Sunday! Lets hope for sunny weather and summer coming soon! Can you believe it's gonna be March tomorrow?! eek!

social theory can kiss my ass....

Okay, not really. I'll write my paper in a few minutes, but first I just want to tell you how much I love homework.

Lets back up for a minute. I suck at school. I hate waking up to go to class, I hate unnecessary homework, and I hate boring lectures. I love learning and I'm pretty sure I'm at least semi-smart; I just prefer to do it on my own. I know, I know...I should do online school, blah blah blah. No. I will finish my undergraduate degree at SUU if it kills me and thus I am up at 1:15 am blogging about how much I love school instead of writing a paper on guy that I can't pronounce his name.

I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. I love school. Enna Bear

If you don't know my sister, you're missing out...so I'll just tell you about her. Anne is one of the very best people on earth, hands down. I think I totally lucked out in the sibling department because I got Anne and Joey and I'm pretty sure they're both perfect. Buddy is pretty rad, too.

Anyway, Enna has been serving a mission for the LDS church since October in the Naga mission. She has loved every second of it, including the rats in her shower bucket, the fact that she has a bucket "shower", spiders bigger than her head, and an array of what I would consider awful food. Anne is amazing and has an outlook on life that is unlike anyone else I know.

Since arriving in the Philippines Anne has had some health problems that have been persistent. Being the little go-getter that she is just let them slide by and hoped that they would eventually go away. Three months have gone by and she is in a great deal of pain and the doctors cannot find anything. My guess is because the "hospital" is more like a grass hut...go figure. We were able to Skype with her this morning and she is still very positive, although her mission president said it's hard for her to get out of bed.

Enna will be flying home and hopefully arriving on Tuesday night to the Salt Lake City airport. As much as I am dying to see her, my heart is breaking for her. I don't think she's ever been as happy as she is right now in her entire life. She loves the Philippines, the people, and everything she has been doing. It's hard for me to watch her have to leave something that she loves because of something out of her control; I wish there was something that I could do for her. Even though this will be a huge challenge for Anne I know that she will take whatever comes her way with a positive outlook.

Joey and I have never been more excited in our lives to do the Decker Butt Dance with our sister. We just hope she gets well soon so that she can return to normal and go back on her mission. For now, we'll enjoy every second we get to spend with her! We love you Enna Bear!

rainbows and butterflies

I am deciding to love my life right now even if it's not exactly what I'd choose if I could. School isn't so bad, my fam is rad, I have the coolest friends in Utah, and I'm going to the Tegan and Sara concert in two weeks. My life in little old Cedar City could be terrible but for the most part, I really do like it.

I mean, if I had the opportunity to leave tomorrow (and have my degree completed), I'd hop on the plane/bus/car/boat/any form of transportation in a heartbeat. I've been itching to get outta here for so long it almost seems like a dream. A bad dream. As much as I truly do love Cedar and all my friends and family that are here, it's not for me. I need something else. I want something different.

Earlier today my friend said she's gonna hop on a plane and move to Texas to runaway from and solve problems. Though I am guilty of doing exactly that a number of times (not quite as drastic moves geographically, but for the same reasons), I don't feel like that's why I want to leave this time. I mean sure, some part of my is probably trying to runaway from something or someone from my past. For the most part though, I think I'm just finally ready to break free from all that is expected of me here in Utah, in my parents basement, from everyone who knows me.

Leaving Cedar isn't going to solve my problems, make me into someone new, or adjust my outlook on life. Leaving Cedar will allow me to be who I am, make new friends, and have new adventures without me having to worry about offending those that are close to me. I'll always love Cedar and I have so many memories and friends here that I think I'll always call it home; I just need to have a "vacation" home as well. Sometimes living here is exhausting; I'm ready to relax and just be myself.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't feel like it is impossible to be myself right here, living in the 'rents basement--it's a choice that I'm making and have made for a long time. In order to respect my parents (family) beliefs it makes it difficult to be "myself". It's not like I'm fake right now, I'm just not doing what I'd be doing under different circumstances.

So here's to getting the hell done with school and getting the eff outta Utah...or at least out of my parents basement.

***this is not meant offensively to my parents. they are some of the coolest folks I know. love you M and D. :)

if my life were made into a book...

I think I live a pretty awesome life and often wonder what it'd be like if it were made into a book. Here's a little sneak preview of what it might be like if I actually decided to take the time to write an autobiography (which at this point in time I have no intention of doing).

Title: How I Survived: Jill's Life in Utahville
Chapter 1: Being Born a Provo-ite: the ins and outs of Happy Valley
Chapter 2: Hating Church; being forced to participate.
Chapter 3: Finding A Husband: AKA, hellish ordeal
Chapter 4: Just Keep Drinking: A Guide To Being an Alcoholic
Chapter 5: Drinking: a continuation of the previous chapter
Chapter 6: Vegas is Only a Two Hour Drive Away: Thank God!
Chapter 7: Gag Me: I Do Not Like You.
Chapter 8: Well Hello There...I DO Like You.
Chapter 9: Wow, Utah Isn't So Bad...I Still Wanna Leave
Chapter 10: to be decided...

i knew this day would come...just didn't think it'd be this soon!

Today I was having a convo with my little bro Joey. If you don't know Joey, you're missing out. Anyway, it went a little something like this:
Me: Hey Joe Bear! Guess what?! You're almost 17! CRAZY! You're getting so big. I hate it.
Joey: Jill. I'm still in high school. I'm not old.
Me: Well Joey, you're gonna be 18 in like a year! What the H!
Joey: Ha, I know! I can't wait.
Me: Do you know how old I am?
Joey: hmmm...I forgot.
Me: I'm 24. Gross. I'm gonna be 25 in September.
Joey: Ew, you're almost 30! You'll be a freak!
Me: Joey, don't be mean! (pretending to cry)
Joey: Well...Jill, get real.

What the hell? My little brother thinks I'm old. Not just getting older, but old. Like old maid status. I think I'm gonna die. I mean, I know I'm gettin' to the "old maid" status in Utah world but that's not a problem for me. I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is the fact that I only have five years until I'm actually "old". EEK!

Good thing I love Joey...a lot. Otherwise he might have been punched in the face or something.

sometimes I am a bitch and I can't stop.

I would apologize for my last few posts since I've been pretty bitchy, but I'm not gonna lie I am just being honest. I guess I could just say that even if you fall under any of the past couple of posts (fbook on your big wedding day, can't spell, etc.), I probably still like you even if I pretend that I wouldn't.

And lets clear up something else: I'm really nice sometimes. I care about people and I love being with friends. Just have some common sense and we'll be okay.

5 Things I'm grateful for:
1. A healthy body that allows me to do so many things.
2. Friends and family who love me no matter what I do or think.
3. Sleep. I just love it. No reason.
4. School. I sure complain about it a lot for liking it so much. I should just suck it up and shut up about it.
5. A job. It's not glamorous but it's a job and those are hard to come by in Utah right now.
